Needle Point

 

The needle of the compass that points to the North Pole is always trembling its end as if it is afraid of something.

So long as the thin end of the needle trembles, it is clear that it does not forget its duty, and that we may well trust the direction in which it points.

When the needle stops its restless trembling, and is fixed to one direction, then we have to throw it always, for it is no longer a true compass.

 

북쪽을 가리키는 나침반의 바늘은 무엇이 두려운지 항상 바르르 떨고 있다.

그 가느다란 바늘이 좌우로 떨고 있는 한, 그것은 자기 임무를 망각하지 않고 있으며 따라서 우리는 그것이 가리키는 방향을 신뢰해도 좋다는 것을 의미한다.

바늘이 떨기를 멈추고 고정된 한 곳만을 가리킨다면 그것은 더이상 나침반이 아닌 것이다. - 신영복
